Proverbs 11

  • 1A false balance is an abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

Have you ever bought a car and when you got it home found out that you bought a”lemon?” That is what this Scripture is about. Be honest in your business dealings with people. Be honest in your communications with people. Be honest in your relationships with people. Don’t show one face to your friend and then talk trash about them with another friend who may not like them! That is wisdom.

  • 2When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

  • 3The integrity of the upright shall guide them;

[ When one is a person of integrity they are trustworthy. When they say they are going to do something they will do it and not make excuses for why they didn’t.]

  • but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
  • 4Riches profit not in the day of wrath:

[When the time of judgment for one’s actions comes it will not matter how many dollars I had in the bank, how much I gave away to others with a pretentious heart, or with the intent of just getting a tax break.]

  • but righteousness delivereth from death.[a righteous or a contrite heart deliver us from eternal death!]

The following verses are comparative in nature.  Just look at the differences in expectations when one compares the behavior and rewards of righteousness compared to the behavior and rewards of unrighteousness. It may appear that the unrighteous are prospering and are doing well, but we must look beyond the immediate present and look to the final destination of both persons.

  • 5The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
  • 6The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
  • 7When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
  • 8The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

This Scripture is very clear about what we call a gossip, whose words are intended to divide and destroy relationships. We have become so PC and so afraid of “hurting” people’s feelings that we are not willing to call a spade a spade so God does it for us in His word. If someone has a problem with the Scripture below then they have a problem with God. I am being very direct here because social media is replete with this type of behavior.

9An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

The benefits of living righteously.

  • 10When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.
  • 11By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: [Notice that even the ungodly are blessed because “the upright” are living according to God’s will, way and purpose!”  but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
  • 12He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace. [This is so hard to so especially when you know better. You want to tell the world don’t you? But the reality is that not many people’s minds will be change by raging all over social media, in text messages.]
  • 13A talebearer revealeth secrets:[Here it is again. Do you think that this is a serious issue with the Lord? Gossip is one of the things that He hates.] but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
  • 14Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. [When a leader refuses to take counsel we have a huge problem. Although this is one of Solomon’s Proverbs he failed in this area and so did his son Rehoboam! It destroy the nation of Israel. If you are in a work situation where the leader refuses to take the counsel of the people they employed there is a problem there! A biblical problem!]
  • 15He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.

One’s character speaks volumes to the outside world and to our brethren.

  • 16A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
  • 17The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
  • 18The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
  • 19As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
  • 20They that are of a froward heart are an abomination to the LORD: [In our society we applaud people who are froward.
skolios: curved, winding, hence crooked

Original Word: σκολιός, ά, όν
Part of Speech: Adjective
Transliteration: skolios
Phonetic Spelling: (skol-ee-os’)
Short Definition: crooked, perverse, unfair
Definition: crooked, perverse, unfair, curved, tortuous

  • but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

How we interact with each other and society in general.

  • 21Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

  • 22As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

  • 23The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

  • 24There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

  • 25The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

  • 26He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

  • 27He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.

  • 28He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

  • 29He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart. [Think carefully about what is happening in society today. Then look back at this Scripture. Is it not coming about as prophesied by Solomon?

  • 30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. [This is our job! Our calling, Our Purpose!]

  • 31Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

How we demonstrate His love as we live with others defines who is in control of our lives! One body, one, Spirit, one Lord, and One Faith! How does the world know that we are Christians?
