Only God can change my heart!

Within the context of Scripture; Read the story of how David tried to cover up his sin with Bathsheba.David made this statement after Nathan the prophet revealed to him God’s displeasure at the sin, he had committed. Ps 51

1Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness;  According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.  2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.  3For I know my transgressions,  And my sin is ever before me.  4Against You, You only, I have sinned  And done what is evil in Your sight,    So that You are justified when You speak  And blameless when You judge.  5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,  And in sin, my mother conceived me.

He acknowledges the fact that since the fall no human being was born perfect. At some point in a person’s life, they experience a conversion and or reconciliation to Christ and the rest of the Godhead. No human being since Adam can claim that they were born without sin. Even if your parents, parents, parents, were born and raised in the church – the fact that one is an offspring of Adam they have sinned. And as Christ said to Nicodemus “You must be born again.”   That is when one’s conversion occurs and one can say “I became a new creation in Christ!”  David continues.

6Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.  7Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;  Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.   8Make me to hear joy and gladness,  Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.  9Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.…  New American Standard Bible

David’s plea to God to create a clean heart in him is as real today for me as it is was for him. You see as a human being I will sin in thought in not in word and or in my actions. I have seen outbursts on social media from person’s who declare purity of spirit, and a continually clean heart. I will say that no human being can make that claim. Not even the most pious of individuals can declare absolute purity of mind, or spirit. We will sin. So, the pattern is we sin – we repent – God applies the blood of Jesus Christ to our lives. We are cleansed.  Transformation of one’s human spirit is not an instant even it is a  lifelong pursuit. And you know what God knows that. So this morning as I was praying, before I say this Scripture for the day, I was telling my Good, Good, Father that revealing my sins to me does me no good because I do not have the human power to clean my heart. I need Him to “create in me a clean heart.” A heart that loves as He loves. A heart that forgives as He forgives. A heart that longs to worship Him because no other being in the universe deserves my worship. I told Him that only He can change my heart and make it more like His. What about you?
