Idolatry – Am I Guilty?

Thou shalt have no other gods before meThou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; (Exodus 20:3-5 KJV)

In today’s social climate where experiencing life through the lives of others is a nomenclature the Scripture above is normally declared “Seriously – it is 2016?” Well God’s word is inherent. No, men did not write it according how they felt back then. God inspired the words. They came from His mind to the mind of the writers using their style of writing, but they are God’s commandments.

So let’s make this idol worship thing real shall we? Currently we have a trend that is rapidly overtaking this nation and even Christians have embraced this trend. What is it? Idol worship! Nah!! Yes!! It is as subtle as a fine German chocolate bar, and as slimy as a snake. We are making ideologies, personalities, and or life styles our god.

  • God is not against pleasurable things, but when they come before God they have become our idol!
  • God is not against the sensual things of life that are pleasurable to individuals – within His holy context – but when it becomes the one thing that we think of more than anything else it becomes our god.
  • God is not against the acquisition of money, but when it comes to us at the expense of the majority of our population or it becomes the main force behind our decision making i.e., political decision, social decisions, community decisions, church attendance, social interactions with people within our community, the distribution of our affections toward our neighbor, then my dear friends it has become our god.
  • God is not against young people “getting together”; however, when that getting together is outside of the holy bonds of marriage and when they refuse to listen, reason, violate all of God’s six commandments regarding the love of self and one’s neighbor, then the relationship and the person has become a “god.”
    • This happens a lot with people who want to be like “everyone” else. They meet someone new and their desire for that person becomes so strong that they become the reason why they “want to breathe air.”  Their behavior becomes irrational. They become engaged in relational behaviors that are so far outside the scope of anything that they were taught, and or believed in, that it is insurmountable for their parents to comprehend how this could have happened to their child.  They will refuse to listen to anyone – even their pastor, social workers, and or friends. Then that person and relationship have become a god to that individual.
  • When “doing” good for others takes God out of the locus of control in our spiritual life – our “act of going good” has become our God.  When working every Sunday to make ends meet instead of assembling with the people of God as commanded by God – then our job has become our God because we have placed our “job” in the position of absolute provision for us instead of God.

Let’s whittle this down to a current national trend. Which political party and or leader will we defend at all cost against everything that the Bible states? Have we placed our trust in a national system, a political party, or a political leader?  Do we believe that any human being can “redeem” the people of our city, county, state, or nation? If we do then that person, their ideology, their party, their leadership and or leadership style have become our god. Do not misinterpret what I am saying here. I am simply stating that our leaders are all human and subject to human failing, but when we refuse to acknowledge that fact, we have made them infallible that is a designation that belong to the Almighty and only the Almighty. Our commission from God is to pray for our leaders – all of them – fervently!! Pray that the decisions that they make will benefit all people. Pray that they will remain safe in their jobs and pray that they will realize that they are not immutable!

So, my friends, are we committing idolatry?  I would say that we are in many ways!

Father forgive me for giving the kind of devotion to men and or things that belong only to you. Your are Jehovah and only you are worthy of my highest praise and or devotion. Your word declares that I should not make, develop, build, nor bow down before anything that comes before you. You should be of primary importance in my life. So, when I begin my day and it it does not begin with you I have placed that event, that idea, that thing I am doing into a place of worship and I am in violation of your first commandment. Father teach me each day how to love you more. How to live for you alone. When I live for you alone I learn how to love my neighbor as myself.  Bless those reading this post today and continue to protect them from all harm. Cover them in the blood of Jesus Father and show them how to experience your presence and they navigate this day in His – Jesus mighty name I pray Amen and Amen!
