What is worship-Singing?

The notes on this page all come from the Prayer Journal written by my pastor Henry Criss (PHC), 2017: This is from today’s devotional. (See Week 4: Day 5). Unless otherwise stated all scripture references are from the KVJ version of the Bible. All comments are mine.

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching (Hebrews 10:25 KJV)

There is no doubt that Christians are called to gather together on the Lord’s Day. However, we sometimes lose sight of the true purpose of gathering, which leads our worship service to become more about meeting our individual preferences than a time to stand together in unity for the purpose of worshiping Jesus. Many Christians place a strong emphasis on the musical portion of worship. While music is a big part of biblical worship encompasses much more (PHC).

1And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:18-19).

Father, continually remind where my priorities must lie in this world.  They cannot be focused on programs, activities, self-promotion, worldly activities that occur on the day of worship that I choose to attend instead of coming to church.  Father never allow my mind to think that it is OK for me to go to a ballgame with my family instead of coming before your presence with my brothers and sisters in Christ as commanded by  Scripture to worship you musically.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Colossians 3:16).

Father God it is so easy for me to become “stuff” focused and neglect the time of personal and corporate worship that is so needful in my life today. Sometimes life just rears its head, and I have to choose between not getting certain things done and focusing on my time of worship with you. It is not a choice that I make lightly because there are seven days in each week.  Negating to spend time with you under the tutelage of your called out servants is an egregious thing in your sight.  Placing you second in my life is not appropriate and when I do that the object of my attention become my god.  It is easy to fall into the trap of ” I have to do things with and for my family, friends, works, school, or loved ones.  Father God never allow me to forget that I must place you first.

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him (John 4:23).

Father God this is my heart’s desire. I do not want to be seen, or perceived as someone who is worshipping/singing to please myself and or someone else.  It must be because I am worshipping you in spirit and in truth.  No one and nothing in heaven or on earth deserve the worship that I must give to you. Not my hobbies, my school work, my family, my garden, or any other pursuits.  I must only worship you in spirit and in truth for you alone are Jehovah.

It has more to do with the condition of our hearts than our activities. Worship begins with God and our role in worship our genuine response to who God is what he does. Worship then, is theological, not because of its practice but because of its subject, the almighty God of the universe. Because our worship is directed to God, it is only fitting that it be in a form in which he directs. From the New Testament, we see five major ways in which we are instructed to respond to God in worship. In our worship gatherings, we are to:

– Read the Bible out loud. Read the following scriptures (PHC).

Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.(1 Timothy 4:13)

This Father is the one thing in this world that I love to do more than anything else.  It is such a blessing to have it on my phone etc. I can read it out loud at home. I can read it out loud in my head during the sermon that you have prepared for me at church. I can listen to it and say it out loud no matter where I am during the day. I am so thankful for this food, this spiritual nourishment that stokes my spiritual roots and enriches my soul as the cool refreshing waters of the Holy Spirit speaks to my spirit through your holy word.

– Preach the Bible Read the following scriptures (PHC).

For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.(Acts 20:27).  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. (2 Timothy 4:2).

Father, I thank you for the servant minister that you have placed in my life who does, in fact, preach the Word in season and our of the season to correct me, rebuke me, exhort me, and refresh me doctrinally.  I need spiritual nourishment as much as the next person and probably more than the next person because when one leads in ministry, the enemy is determined to destroy them.

– Pray the Bible – Read the following scriptures (PHC).

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.(1 Corinthians 14:12) How is it then, brethren? When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying (I Corinthians. 14:26) I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. (1 Timothy 2:8).  These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar, and ground of the truth.(I Timothy 3:14-15).

Father, as I read, speak, sing, and reflect on Scripture please bury it into my soul. Into the far recesses of my mind so that I may pray Scripture.  It lifts my spirit so much when I do this.  I know that I don’t do it every single time that I pray, but when the Holy Spirit guides me to do so, it blesses my soul so much.  Remind me each day to have a time when I am praying Scripture.  Your Word nourishes my soul and uplifts me no matter what my emotional state is. It is better when I pray Scripture. When I am joyful Scripture comes to mind, when I am sad Scripture comes to mind – probably nowhere near as often as it should because I am not focusing on You as the source of the solution to the immediate problem.  However, when I stop and listen to the Holy Spirit everything changes.  One of these days I will do it the first time every time.  But thank you for your Word Father.

– Sing the Bible together. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:18-19).

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Colossians 3:16).

This song tells my heart Father – my heart for worship through song is probably bigger than my need for anything else.  It is a need for me!

– And See the Bible in action through observing the ordinances

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19).

Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? what shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

Communion: The Bread-The Body.

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Communion: The Wine-The Blood.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Communion: The Blessing of Participation.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

Communion: The Condemnation of Partaking in Communion Unworthily.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

Communion: The Result of Partaking in Communion Unworthily.

For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

Communion: The Preparation Before Communion

Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. 34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come (1 Corinthians 11:17-34; PHC).
