Context

Psalm 47 is a hymn that celebrates God as King not just over Israel, but overall the earth. He establishes his kingship by his victory over the nations, forcing them to recognize him as King. He ascends the throne accompanied by the sounds of trumpets and human voices” (Longman 2014, 207).

All nation will exalt Him!

(To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.) O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

all ye people” means all nations will worship the “King of Kings and Lord of Lord because he has triumphed victoriously. Our God is sovereign not only over the nation of Israel but also over all nations! Tells us to praise, clap, and glorify God because He has won the battle.

  • Genesis 12:3 ESV “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
  • Exodus 15:21 ESVAnd Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”  He has also given us the victory over sin and death.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:57 ESV  “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Even Gentile nations are expected to praise and glorify God’s name and will do so when Christ returns to this earth.

Romans 15:9 (ESV) and so that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.” Longman proposes that God expects all nations to worship Him. So, “the psalmist calls on all the nations (or ‘peoples’; ‘ammîm ) to do exactly that” (Longman 2014, 207).

God is King Over All The Earth

  • For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.
  • He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
  • He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

The second stanza of this poem “beginning with for [ kî ]” gives the people a reason to praise God “he is a great King over all the earth” (Longman, 207).  This indicates that God is greater than all god on the earth. Ps. 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth.” We serve the one and only Sovereign King of all the earth.

Verse 3   All power, honor, and leadership belongs to him; thus, the leaders of all nations must bow down to Him. They must pay homage to the true King. They must be obedient to Him. It is not happening right now, but it will happen at the end time. Revelation 20:6 “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years.”  We don’t win the final battle here on earth. Christ wins that battle. HE is also the reason why we are winning spiritual battles today.

Verse 4 Note the focus on God’s covenant blessing that the descendants of Jacob will receive. “He chooses our inheritance for us.” Gen. 12:1-3 ESV speaks about the call of Abram. “Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.  And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” The latter part of the covenant blessing was realized on the day that Christ died. We are a part of that special blessing. See Eph. 1:4; 1 Peter 1:2 We are the elect of God’ “hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.”

God Climbs Up To [and Sits] On His Throne

  • God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
  • Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
  • For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

Matthew 24:31 “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

Picture the inauguration of the new President, then multiply the sound, splendor, and regalia at that inauguration by a billion and you will experience the pomp and circumstance of God ascending to His throne. It is not a silent or solemn occasion.

It is accompanied “with a shout” not of pay but of pure joy! It is heralded with the “sound of a trumpet [the Hebrews indicates “ram’s horns or “šôpār”] heralding this auspicious event (Longman 208). Within our own experiences, we are aware that a throne is usually placed above the place where the citizens are seated. I am sure that it is the same in this passage. After all, King David would not write about something with which he has no experience.

This picture is not a symbolic representation of the Feast of Trumpets or a religious observance. It is depicting the reality of the sovereignty of God. Peter declared “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.” Cayce captured the importance of this “choosing” when he stated, “The people of God will shout in triumph on the day when the rightful “King of all the earth” reigns” (Cayce 2018, Psalm 47).

Philippians 2:10  is not speaking about the “King of the Jews,” but it is speaking about The King of ALL Nations. “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.” The bowing began when He ascended to heaven!

In case We Didn’t Get it the First Time: God Reigns Over The Nations

  •  God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.
  • The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.

Verse 8 confirms our previous statement that God reigns over “heathen”  and or all nations, because, “for the shields of the earth belong unto God.” Now everyone bows down before Him and pays homage to Him! God reigns now! Where is Christ sitting right now?

Hebrews 8:1-2 “Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.” Jesus is bigger and more powerful than any leader that exists on earth today!

Acts 7:49 “Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?”

“The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham:” What does this have to do with us? Galatians 3:29 “And if ye be Christ’s,  [Christians} then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” So, my dear friends, although we live in a fallen world with fallen people and fallen leaders. “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:1-3.

Lift up your hands and worship the only one who deserves your praise. Because the time is at hand and we will see changes in this dark world. The kind of changes that all of creation is groaning for. “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now” Romans 8:22. Until that day let us encourage each other and remember the God whom we serve is MORE than enough!
