My ultimate teacher is…

#MyTeacherLovesMe #MyTeacherisPatientWithMe #MyTeacherNeverIgnoresMe

…….As a teacher, I am still in contact with many of my students! I am actually filled with pride when seeing what they have accomplished with their lives. I am not, and will never be a screamer! I never raised my voice at my students. I worked on establishing a relationship with them before they even came to my classroom. I called their parents to welcome the entire family into my classroom. I developed a sense of community and taught them how to get to know the people in the classroom who were not in their classes the previous year. I looped with my early childhood students from first grade to second grade. The first year that I looped the children and their parents told me that it was not like the first day of a new school year for them. They were coming back to “family” so to speak. I never used harsh behavioral controls to manage my classroom and or my children. But I could leave them in the classroom and walk to the front office which was a long way from my classroom and know that they would be quiet while I was gone and would be on task. How did I learn these skills? Not just in college – although I had amazing mentors during my tenure in the School of Education at Brooklyn College – I learned them from my ultimate teacher-the Lord.  ‘”God does not control us or communicates with us by shouting at us. Elijah experienced His method of communication “Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice” (1 Kings 19:11-13 NKJV).

  • The Lord uses questioning techniques to teach us. “So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” But He questions with a still small voice-even when we are pouting and have lost our trust in Him and the lessons we are learning!
  • He uses no behavior modification-yet my relationship with Him is reliance, compliance and complete trust!
  • When I am puzzled He tells me to wait and trust Him to because He already has an answer for the puzzle. He speaks to my heart by telling me to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs3:5-6 KJV). Then after he answers He shows me how to apply that answer to my life!
  • He never uses planned ignoring to get my attention. I ask and He answers always with something that leads me along the path where I should go. His word tells me to “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jer 33:3).
  • The Lord is my teacher! He is never tired of me asking questions. He is my problem solver because He shows me how to solve my most difficult problems! Relationships! “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” (Psalms 32:8)
  • He takes me deeper and deeper in my understanding of who He is in my life and opens up the fountain of knowledge to me should I chose to participate in the learning process.
  • He teaches me through experiences – today we call that Project Based Learning.  He never tells me that my project is dilapidated or that I am incapable of learning the life lesson He is teaching me. He tells me to “Be still, and know that I am God” Psalms 40:10 KJV.
  • He never stops being my teacher! The older I become the more I realize that I need His instruction! I need the relationship that places me in the most protective teach/child relationship in the universe. You see He is not just my teacher. He is also my Father!
