The Fruit of the Spirit.

Image may contain: plant, fruit, outdoor, food and nature

As soon as I saw this picture I thought about the “Fruit of the spirit” scripture in Galatians 5.22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.KJV

First of all, note that it states fruit not fruits. The biblical term “fruit of the Spirit’ references the nine visible attributes that are evident in the lives of “true Christians.” Or people who are really filled with the Holy Spirit. Or it is what the world sees when the Holy Spirit begins the transformation process in the lives of Christians (Ro 12:2). NASB Lexicon breaks up this Scripture into its Greek definitive and provides the meaning for each term.

But the fruit καρπὸς karpos 2590 fruit a prim. word
of the Spirit πνεὐματος pneumatos 4151 wind, spirit from pneó
is love, ἀγάπη agapē 26 love, goodwill from agapaó
joy, χαρὰ chara 5479 joy, delight from chairó
peace, εἰρήνη eirēnē 1515   of uncertain derivation, perhaps from eiró (to join): lit. or fig. peace, by impl. welfare
patience, μακροθυμία makrothumia 3115 patience, long-suffering from makros and thumos
kindness, χρηστότης chrēstotēs 5544 goodness, excellence, uprightness from chréstos
goodness, ἀγαθωσύνη agathōsunē 19b goodness from agathos
faithfulness, πίστις pistis 4102 faith, faithfulness from peithó

Strongs’ Concordance further explains the word “fruit” by identifying it place in the part of speech: karpos: fruit

Original Word: καρπός, οῦ, ὁ
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: karpos
Phonetic Spelling: (kar-pos’)
Short Definition: fruit, result, gain

  • (a) fruit, generally vegetable, sometimes animal,
  • (b) met: fruit, deed, action, result,
  • (c) profit, gain.

One could also state what is implied by that “fruit” presents itself as 2 lives intertwined living as one entity to produce eternal results John 15:1-2 (KJV). Why, because we [Christians] are the branches and Christ is the vine. If you have ever grown grapes you know that the branch does not produce fruit when it is separated from the vine.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

1 John 4:17 (KJV) further iterates the benefits of the “fruit of the spirit.”

“This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.”

I wish that we demonstrated this more on social media! Today we can experience that peace, true freedom, and spiritual abundance simply because we “Know” Jesus as our Savior. Paul believes that as long as we live lives that serves only our flesh we are not free. In Galatians 3 Paul talks about the freedom that we have in Christ to the Galatian because they were becoming embroiled in the dos and don’ts of the old covenant. In Galatians 4 he talks to them about the heritage that they have in Christ and their adoptive status in Christ. Verses 1 and 2 states

Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father” KJV.

Chapter 5 begins with the explanation of freedom from the law and then describes the fruit or works of the flesh and ends with the “fruit of the spirit.” If a person questions the validity of your statement that you are indeed a Christian they may be questioning the oxymoron between your behavior and your words. Verses 19-21 chronicles the works of the flesh.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Note that the highlighted words all reference things that are mentioned in the ten commandments, except for drunkenness and revellings, but those two behaviors are mentioned in the Torah.  You see one cannot state that they are a Christian then spew out venom on people when they are angry. Ungodly anger or rather how we behave when we are angry is always the plumb line that people use to ascertain whether or not a person is really a Christian. Wrath and strife are attributes of ungodly anger and they show that we are not are growing closer to God and we are learning to love ALL people better.

On the other hand, the fruit of the spirit detailed in verses 22-23 are behaviors that come from Gods type of love for humanity.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

As we grow closer to God we develop these attributes. Agape love has no boundaries, no ifs, no ands, and certainly no buts! When we operate from a standpoint of love we living proof of the fruit of the spirit. We experience emotional and spiritual abundance that is unparalleled by any human experience. We love because it is who we are and not something that we do because we were told to do it. We love because it shows the world that Christ lives in us. We love because love is the embodiment of the nine attributes of the spirit.
