True Love requires action.

Love is an action verb. It is not something we merely read, sing, write, or talk about. It is who and what we are and is demonstrated in what we do to and for others, not inanimate objects! #loveindeed Struggling with that? Contact us?

The words “I love You!” are words that every human being needs to hear. However, we have become so flippant with the phrase that it is losing it’s emotional, spiritual, and psychological impact on all of us. The word “Love” is not an ideal, an idea, or a theoretical construct.

Webster’s dictionary proffers a definition that demonstrations the core understanding of the word love. ”

a unselfish loyal and benevolent (see benevolent 1a) concern for the good of another: such as
(1) the fatherly concern of God for humankind
(2) brotherly concern for others
b a person’s adoration of God

Scripture defines the word “love” as an action verb. The highlighted words below are all things that we do or were done for us.

  1. For God so loved the world that he gave (action) his one and only Son, that whoever believes (action) in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV. ( Unless otherwise noted all Bible references in this post are from NIV version.). Belief is not a formula for a scientist’s board. In fact, the formula is useless unless the scientist “proves” or “disproves it.” In other words, the scientist has to act. Christ followers’ actions show whether or not they are true followers of Christ.
  2.  Greater love has no one than this: to lay down (action) one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13
  3. “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers (action)  over a multitude of sins.”  1 Peter 4:8
  4. “But God demonstrates (action) his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died (action) for us.” Rom. 5:8
  5. “But you, O Lord, are a compassionate (action) and gracious God, slow to anger,(action) abounding in love and faithfulness.(actions) ”  Psalm 86:15
  6. “Let all that you do be done (action) in love.”  1 Corinthians 16:14
  7. “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other.  Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.  Your love (actions ) for one another will prove (action) to the world that you are my disciples.”  John 13:34-35
  8. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives (action) out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  We love because He first loved us.”
  9.  1 John 4:18-19“So now faith, hope, and love abide (action), these three; but the greatest of these is love.”  1 Corinthians 13:13.
  10. “If you love me, you will obey (action) what I command.”
  11.  John 14:15 “Above all, be loving. This ties (action) everything together perfectly.”
  12.  Colossians 3:14“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God (action) and knows God.
  13. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
  14.  1 John 4:7-8 “Hate stirs up trouble, but love forgives (action) all offenses.”
  15.  Proverbs 10:12 “Love must be sincere. Hate (action) what is evil; cling (action) to what is good. Be devoted (action) to one another in brotherly love. Honor (action) one another above yourselves.”  Romans 12:9-10

The world’s love month has come to an end. However, God’s commandment to “love each other as He loves us” is not something we do occasionally, or as it suits us. It is who we are if we declare that we are followers of Christ. It requires actions on our part. If you are struggling with “being” a person who demonstrates the love of God to even their enemy, let’s talk about how you can navigate that through the power of the Holy Spirit.
