Is He serious? Me a Saint!

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. …But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 

Can you imagine that the sustainer of the universe, “the Holy One” of The Canon of Scripture calls us…

like living stones, … a holy priesthood,  …But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession,”

Am I a saint or am I a sinner?

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies [sinners], we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Ro 5:9-11 (NIV)

Reconciled to God but reconciled as what? I Pet 1:16 declares “for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” To be “holy” means to be set apart. [Hebrew definition.] Strong’s Concordance renders a Greek definition that presents the same meaning. So God declares that we are “set apart” from the world through the reconciliation that the blood of Jesus Christ offers to us. Christ was the ultimate person who was set apart. When an individual becomes a Christian and a follower of Christ they take upon themselves His identity-“holy/set apart.”  As a follower of Christ, the process of transformation began at the second that we declared Him Lord of our lives. However, we are human being and subject to thinking sinful thoughts and or deeds. Paul offered an explanation of who we are as human beings  “24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind, I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:24-25 (NKJV) If the Apostle Paul had challenges living a sinless life so will we. But that does not make us a “sinner.” Strong’s concordance defines a sinner as an “impious, ungodly, wicked” person.

In spite of our humanness and our failings, Paul strongly stated that we are “saints.” If any church deserved to be called anything other than “saints” it would be the Corinthian church-in human terms and judging with human eyes-that is what we would state. But just look at what Paul called them

Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their’s and our’s: 1 Cor 1:2 (KJV)

 

This statement was made before he started to tell them about the divisions and confusion present in the church. This is before he addresses them about the ignominious sin of fornication being practiced, and accepted, by the leaders of the church who refused to follow his directives on how to handle the situation. Furthermore, this is also before he addressed the fact that brethren were suing each other in a court of law. He was appalled at their behavior and reminded them that in this present time

Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? I Cor 6 2-3

Now in this day an age we would declare that any person in any church who committed fornication is a sinner and should be “damned to hell!” Here Paul tells the Corinthian “saints”

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

We are so ready to label ourselves as sinners – as if that makes us more pious. No, it does not. We were once “sinners” but we are “saved by grace”.  Am I declaring that we are saints and therefore we can continue in sin? In Romans 6 Paul made it quite clear that we cannot live a sinful life and declared that “grace makes us a saint.”

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.  For he that is dead is freed from sin.

James 2 speaks to our Heavenly Father’s expectations of us

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.  25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Finally, not only dead people who have done extraordinary things are called ‘saints.” In Romans 10 Paul professed that

if thou ..confessed with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and ..believe[ed] in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

So, because we have done all of the above our good, good, Father calls us “saints” in the same manner in which He called the Corinthians saints.
