God is love

This day has been set aside for individuals to demonstrate their love towards each other.  God is the epitome of what love is.

  1. God has demonstrated his love toward us through his Son Jesus Christ.
  2. God shows us His love in the way that He protects and cares for us each day.
  3. God’s word declares that we must be Him to others in how we love them.  We do that by loving them in the same way that He loves us.  Let us look at the Word of God directly, not the words of man. His word is replete with His demonstrable love.

(All scripture references in this post are from the New International Version NIV).

God’s Love Shown Through Jesus Christ

  1. John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Would we be willing to give up our priced possession for people who hate us?  That is what God did.  Love as He loved.  Give up a few minutes each day to pray for a total stranger.  Reach out to the unloved and let them know that you care about them.  Love on someone whom you know is living a life that is full of sin.  God does that to each of us every single day.  We sin in thought if not in word and deed.
  2. Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The church in Galatia was sinning right left and center.  Every type of immorality that you could imagine was happening there, But God clarified His love for them in spite of their sin.
  3. Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”  As we crucify the flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit our lives are transformed into to live that show the beauty and majesty of the love of God to our fellow man.
  4. Ephesians 2:4-5 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,  made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” By grace and not by our works.  Our works are as filthy rags to God.

God Loves, Protects, and Cares For Us

  1. Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;  in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
  2. 1 John 4:7-8  “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love..”
  3. Psalm 86:15 But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”  When was the last time that we lost our temper with someone because they were not measuring up to our expectations?
  4. 1 John 3:1 “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

What is the commandment that God has given to us about Love?

John 13:34-35   “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Can we show this love even to the sinner? Yes if the Holy Spirit lives in us

I am not going to pontificate on this day and what it represents to the world.  We are commanded to live a life of love everyday of the week.

Father forgive us for not being Jesus to others the way you are to us.  Amen.
