Who do you Belong to?

If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

Romans 14:8 NIV[1]

We live in a world that is fraught with crime, death, accidents, wars, threats to life and limb, and out of control violence.  This violence could be within one’s own neighborhood or it simply could be the end result of some type of injustice.  I spoke to the Father of my dear friend who was gunned down during a prayer meeting, by someone whom I can only state must have been possessed and not by an angel.  I will say at this time that we must pray for this young man.  We are admonished by the Lord to pray for our enemies.  It is not an easy thing to do, but Christ with me and you will enable us to do so.

So again who do you belong to?  Why do we live this life-this Christian life? What is our final destination and what is our hope?

Who do you belong to?

According to Romans 8:-14, we belong to Jesus Christ. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins.  He releases us from the shackles of enslavement to sin by his blood sacrifice]. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”  As long as we live according the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit we belong to God!   Paul clarifies this by stating that, “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6)  Life and peace come only from God the Father through acceptance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, thus allowing the Holy Spirit to live inside of us and govern our thoughts, words, and actions.

So how do you know who you belong to? “You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ” (Romans 8:9).  None of us belongs to Christ or God the Father if the Holy Spirit does not live in us.  There is no second, third, fourth, or fifth chance to change our minds after we have died.  For us to belong to Christ we must have the Spirit living with us before we die.

Therefore, why do we live this life-this Christian life? What is our final destination and what is our hope?

We live this life as an act of Love of the Father and in thankfulness for the sacrifice of the Son.  We also live it to share it with others so that they too may come to know the one true God.  Look at what the Apostle Paul said, “But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you”  (Romans 8:10-11).What a glorious hope and what and amazing promise.  It is something that all Christians look forward to.  Dropping this mortal body and living with our Heavenly Father.

Paul is not finished with this discourse.  He wants us to understand what God has in store for us and how we receive it. “Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die [this is speaking to eternal death]; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.[this is speaking about living eternally with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ]( Romans 8:12-13).  Paul continues, “ For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.[We belong to GOD!] Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory (Romans 8:12-15).

Now that we know who we belong to my dear friends, we also know that, “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” (Romans 14:8)  Death is not the final nail in our coffins, neither is it a rite of passage to a holding place of separation from God.  Death for a believer is life eternal with Christ immediately!  I hope that this study has brought hope and rejoicing to the many people who have lost loved ones over the past few months.  Please feel free to contact us for prayer.  We are always here for you, but more importantly God is always with you.
