Do not fear

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:1

As life pushes in on us we tend to forget this promise of God.  For the last 2 weeks I have been gripped with grief. I have had moments of joy knowing that God is right there with me.  But the grief was real, tangible, and oppressive.  His words tells me, “Come to me all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30.

You know something when I looked  at scripture this weekend and allowed the word of God to permeate my mind I was reminded that no one single time did he promise me/us a rose garden,    Every well known servant of  God suffered and suffered intensely.

I could list a few:

  1. God calls Abram – a man of some means – a wealthy man respected in his community then he tells him to pack up and follow him.  He does not tell him how to get there or even clearly delineates where he is going.  Genesis 12:1
  2. He told man of his minor prophets to marry prostitutes – this brought about humiliation for them and their families.  The Book of Hosea.
  3. He impregnates a virgin at a period of time that would have resulted in certain death for her if the community knew about it.  Matthew 1:18.
  4. Dare I mention Job? He was stripped of everything.  His health, his wealth, his lands, his children, his position at the gate.  What was he left with?  His accusatory friends who swore that he had committed some horrific sin for which God was punishing him, His wife on the other hand knew better.  She knew he had not sinned so she just told him to curse God and die.  Job 2:9.
  5. How about the Apostle Paul, Beaten bruised battered and imprisoned for the glory of God.  Out of that imprisonment came many of the books o the NT.

As we live in this world we have allowed our minds to become conformed to what the world thinks the Christian like should be.  No my friends it will not always be hunky dory.  There are times that we will scream out of the depths of our soul to our father asking him to remove this one from us.  Don’t allow the world to convince us that a Christians life is the “‘good” life.  God grows and sifts us through trials.  He knows the end game.  Unfortunately we don’t believe that he knows it and we don’t believe that we win.

It is quite alright to cry out to him when our flesh just cannot take another thing that is going wrong in our lives.  Just remember that Job’s wife’s advice was foolishness.  God allows things to happen to us so we can grow in our faith. Read the book of Hebrews to encourage you.
