New Testament
- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
- John 3:18 says, “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already.” So the issue is not merely dying, but being judged by God. And John 3:36 is the most sobering verse of all in this Gospel: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
- Listen to John 1:1, alongside John 1:14: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. . . . And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.” This might confuse people, But Jesus is God, and God the Father is God. He gave His most precious gift to be sacrificed for us and our sins.
- And Romans 8:32 says, “[God] did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all” — to die for his enemies, to take away the wrath of God. God has a Son who is God. If we don’t know at least that much of the Trinity, we can’t know the love of God. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son.”
- See how much He God Loves us. “In this, the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him” (1 John 4:8–9)
- It takes faith to believe in and come to Jesus as your only Redeemer. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)
- His grace is enough to save us from eternal damnation. “By grace, you have been saved. [It takes what to accept that grace?] through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8)
- So what is the gift? Eternal life instead of eternal separation from God. In John 17:3, Jesus defined “eternal life.” Jesus was praying to his Father in heaven, saying, “This is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” “I [Jesus] am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
- So we work today for not eternal life. It is a gift of God, but we work to share the good news with people all over the world because people need the Lord. “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58.
- Yes, we have a reward when we labor for the Lord, but more importantly, souls are being saved for the kingdom’s sake because of our labor of love for the Lord. Every word of Scripture in the Bible Points to Jesus, even in the Old Testament.
