Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”[a] (Hebrews 13:5 NIV)
How does a person who loves money behave?
It is really a simple construct to understand. A person who has made love their god [that is what the scripture implies] lives for the joy of money. They will make all of life’s decisions based on one thing, “If I do and or say xyz will it impact my access to money?” For instance, if associating with people who are not of my social status lessens my social status – I will not associate with those people. If attending a specific church will lessen my access to “money” or reduce my social status in the eyes of the people in my concentric circle, then I will not attend that church.Job 31:24 NIV. “If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security.”
Remember what the Pharisees said about Jesus? There is absolutely nothing wrong with acquiring wealth. It is what we do with the idea of being wealthy that changes the scenario. It is our relationships with others while acquiring wealth that becomes a measure of our spiritual compass. It is the place of money on our moral compass that ascertains our attachment to money. Money is not evil. Being wealthy is not evil. Worshipping money and placing the need for money above God and His Great Commission is not appropriate.
How does a content person behave?
Contentment shows that we trust in Jehovah Jireh.Contentment demonstrates our belief in the sovereignty of God over our lives. 1 Timothy 6:6 NIV “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” Contentment shows that we believed what God said in Hebrews 13:5 because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
We live in a world that espouses discontent. Society teaches us to yearn after stuff. The more we get the more we want, “Hebrews tells us to keep our lives free from the love of money. The best way to do this is to focus on the fact that no matter what, God will never, ever leave us. No matter what, God has our back with His almighty power, a power to which earthly wealth cannot compare.” (Adapted from: Taken from Once a Day At the Table). Pray for God to give us all contentment – the kind that comes only from truly trusting Him to be our provider.

I can truly relate to this. My son for years has been giving all his attention to
people he barely knows but believes can be of benefit to him financially. One Christmas he bought boxes of Christmas cards with his name engraved and sent them to such people with warm personal greetings while failing to express concern for family or close friends. Greed caused him to gamble “borrowing” money he
could not sneak back in time to keep from going to federal prison and losing his law license. Because he respects people only for their wealth, he believes that others do the same and lies to impress them. Greed has ruined his life and brought stress and heartache to his family. Yet, he still will tell you that his failure is due to bad luck or not being rewarded properly by others.

Melissa, that is a common problem among people for whom status, or perceived status, is the bane of their existence. I am so sorry to know that he could not differentiate between status, money, and who he was in the eyes of his family, and God 😦
